Reading & Phonics

Children in Reception and Key Stage 1

Children in Reception and Key Stage One follow the DfES Letters and Sounds program. This is a daily approach to teaching phonics in which individual letters and sounds are blended to form words.

The books we offer at our school an expansive range of fiction and non-fiction texts in order that the breadth of children’s reading may be developed further. Once they finish the reading scheme we encourage them to become independent readers and choose their own books from classroom and school libraries. We also have a number of reading intervention programmes in place to boost individual reader’s progress as children learn to read at different rates. One of those intervention schemes is Reading Recovery.

Reading Recovery is a well-established intervention scheme for children with reading difficulties. The programme provides daily half-hour sessions with specially trained Reading Recovery teachers for six-year-olds.
